Understanding International SEO
Why International SEO Is Not Just "Regular SEO in Another Country"
International SEO is a distinct discipline, not an extension of domestic SEO with the language changed. When an Indian business decides to target customers in the United States, the United Kingdom, or the UAE, Google needs to understand which version of the website to serve to users in each country. Without explicit technical signals, Google will guess, and it usually guesses wrong, serving your Indian-market content to US searchers, or vice versa.
The technical mechanism that prevents this is the hreflang attribute: an HTML annotation (or XML sitemap entry) that tells Google both the language and the country-region each page targets. Getting hreflang wrong, missing reciprocal annotations, incorrect language codes, and absent self-referencing cause ranking cannibalisation across markets, where your India and US pages compete against each other rather than reinforcing each other.
The URL Structure Dilemma
Before any content or link work begins, an international SEO strategy must answer one foundational question: how will you structure the URLs for each country version of your site?
ccTLD (Country Code Top-Level Domain): example.co.in for India, example.co.uk for UK. Strongest geo-targeting signal. It requires building separate domain authority for each and is expensive and slow for businesses entering new markets.
Subdomain: in.example.com, us.example.com. Treated by Google as a separate site from the root domain. Authority does not consolidate. Generally not recommended unless technically necessary.
Subfolder: example.com/in/, example.com/us/. Easiest to implement. All subfolders inherit the root domain's authority. Recommended for most businesses, especially those new to international markets.
The right choice depends on your existing domain authority, how many markets you're entering simultaneously, your development team's capacity, and your long-term international growth plan. There is no single correct answer; anyone who tells you otherwise without understanding your specific situation is following a template.
Content Localisation vs. Translation: Why the Difference Matters for Rankings
A US searcher typing "SEO company" has a different intent than an Indian searcher typing "SEO company in Chennai." The US searcher is comparing enterprise vendors; the Indian searcher may be a startup founder evaluating their first digital marketing engagement. Showing the same content to both, translated into American English, means neither page is fully optimised for the intent behind the search.
True localisation means rewriting content for how people in each market think about, search for, and evaluate the product or service, with local pricing references, locally relevant case studies, trust signals appropriate to that market (UK companies trust .co.uk domains and FCA registration; US buyers trust G2 reviews and US press coverage), and keyword usage that matches how that market's users actually phrase their searches.
How Long Does International SEO Take?
Realistic timelines depend on your starting point. For a site with zero presence in a target market, expect 4–6 months before meaningful organic traffic appears in Google Search Console for that country. Page-one rankings for competitive keywords in markets like the US typically require 12–18 months of consistent technical, content, and link-building work. Markets with less competition, such as in certain APAC markets or niche B2B sectors, can show significant results in 6–9 months.
The most common mistake Indian businesses make when entering international SEO is underestimating both the timeline and the investment required. US market competition, in particular, has been building domain authority and topical coverage for years; closing that gap requires patience, consistency, and a strategy built around your specific competitive gaps, not a generic monthly content plan.
